Why is portable AC leaking?
The most likely reason why your portable AC is leaking is that water in the condensate trap – aka the drip tray – is overflowing. Alternatively, your portable AC may be leaking because of a faulty pump, loose plug, clogged filters, or a clogged drain line.
Full condensate trap
The most likely reason why your portable AC is leaking is that your condensate trap is overflowing. The condensate trap – or drip tray – collects all the condensation that forms while your portable AC cools your home.
This condensation is the reason why air conditioning “dries out” the air in your home. It forms because the cold elements reduce the temperature of moisture in your home’s air so that it turns into a liquid.
Loose drain plug
A loose drain plug will let drips of water out of the unit. Check your drain plug to make sure its sufficiently tight if you see leaking.
Clogged filters
Portable air conditioners have filters that clean the air flowing in and out of your unit. These filters will accumulate dust over time and can become clogged if you don’t clean them.
The problem with clogged portable AC filters is that they stop the flow of air into your portable AC. This blockage causes the inside of the air conditioner to get very cold and ice will form on the condensate coil.
A build-up of ice will eventually melt when you turn off the machine, causing water to leak out. This may be your problem if you notice leaking after your portable AC has been idle for a while.
Clogged drain line
The drain line carries water to the condensate trap. If your drain line is clogged it can cause a build-up of pressure and leaks from the drain line.
Broken condensate pump
A broken condensate pump won’t be able to move moisture away from your portable AC components and into the condensate tray. The result is that more moisture will form inside your portable AC and leaks are more likely.
