How much does a Window AC weigh?

A window AC weighs 50 – 70 pounds on average. But window AC weight depends heavily on output. More powerful units can weigh up to 130 lbs while low-capacity units can be as light as 35 pounds

The reason why there’s such a strong relationship between output and weight is that a window AC needs more refrigerant in order to cool faster. More refrigerant means larger coils and a bigger, more powerful compressor to drive the system.

Making all those components more powerful means a much heavier window AC. Here’s a table to give you an indication of the relationship between window AC output and weight.

Cooling Capacity (BTUs)Weight RangeAverage Weight
5,000 BTU35 – 45 lbs40 lbs
6,000 BTU40 – 50lbs45 lbs
8,000 BTU50 – 70lbs60 lbs
10,000 BTU55 – 75 lbs65 lbs
12,000 BTU65 – 85lbs75 lbs
15,000 BTU80 – 100 lbs90 lbs
18,000 BTU100 – 130 lbs115 lbs
25,000 BTU130 – 170 lbs150 lbs

The output measurements in this table are represented in BTUs (British Thermal Units). A BTU is a unit of thermal energy equal to the amount needed to change the temperature of one kilogram of water by 1 degree Fahrenheit.

All window AC units will have a cooling capacity displayed in BTUs. How many BTUs you need will be determined by the size of your property as well as the climate and your building’s insulation.
