How long does a Window AC last?
A typical window AC lasts for 8 – 12 years before it needs to be replaced. More durable window ACs can last as long as 20 years with some luck.
Window Air Conditioners have shorter lifespans compared to other types of air conditioners. Window ACs are a lot more susceptible to damage than fixed AC systems because they are likely to get bumped when they are moved in and out of the window.
Also, window ACs are exposed to the elements because half of their components hang out the window. The exterior of a window AC is subjected to wind, rain, and snow on a regular basis.
Here’s how the lifespan of a window AC compares to other common types of air conditioners:
- Portable AC – 5 – 10 years
- Window Unit AC – 8 – 12 years
- Whole-home AC unit – 13 – 17 years
- Central air conditioner – 13 – 17 years
- Ductless mini-split AC systems (heat pumps) – 18 – 22 years
As the above data indicate, only portable ACs have shorter lifespans than window ACs. When choosing a type of AC, its worth considering that you’re likely to buy twice as many window ACs as you would ductless mini-split AC systems.
Window ACs still work out to be considerably cheaper, but it’s worth factoring lifespan into cost considerations.
